“One in five Australian adults experience a mental health disorder every year...”

This course has been customised for the workplace and is most suited to:

  • Supervisors and Managers
  • Human Resource Professionals
  • OS&H / HSE staff
  • Workplace First Responders
  • Peer Supporters

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. One in five Australian adults experience a mental health disorder every year and while people often know a lot about common physical health  problems, there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people providing appropriate support to colleagues and family  members, simply because they do not know how.

This course is being used by organisations and government departments to equip staff with the knowledge and skills to not only respond to issues in their clients but also in themselves and their colleagues. By empowering staff with the skills to appropriately and respectfully respond to a colleague who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis, they are able to improve the likelihood of the person getting much needed support and intervention. This knowledge in the workplace can also assist with the ongoing support of a colleague who may be experiencing ongoing mental health issues or who may be returning to work after time off for mental illness.

Topics covered:

  • Depression (including suicide)
  • Anxiety Disorders (including panic attack & acute stress reaction)
  • Psychosis (including acute psychotic episode)
  • Substance Misuse (including overdose)
